Advanced Standing Degree Option

The Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management Advanced Standing Degree Option allows UW MHA and Executive MHA graduates to earn a MHIHIM degree on an accelerated schedule. Designed for MHA and Executive MHA alumni who would like specialized training in health informatics and information management or who desire the additional credential, the program enables students to build on their health administration foundation to advance into leadership roles in health information systems and to develop domain expertise in health informatics.

Degree Requirements

To earn the degree, students must complete 36 credits of health information management (HIM) coursework, including a capstone project, in four quarters.

Format and Length

The MHIHIM Advanced Standing Degree Option is a part-time program that begins in autumn quarter and is completed in four academic quarters. Students attend classes once a month, Thursday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at UW Professional & Continuing Education's Park 140 facility in Bellevue.

In addition to the monthly in-person classes, students are also expected to participate in weekly webinars throughout each academic quarter. Online sessions are held Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. on weeks when there are no on-site classes. For detailed schedule information, see the Student Resources page.


The MHIHIM curriculum aims to develop skills in applied health informatics, leadership and strategic planning. Topics include:

  • Organizational and team management
  • Enterprise-level electronic health record systems
  • Enterprise information governance
  • Clinical systems management
  • Applied health informatics
  • Health information technology
  • Health data management, analytics and business intelligence
  • Epidemiology and critical evidence appraisal
  • Data structures and terminologies
  • Database design
  • Quality assurance theory and application
  • Project management
  • Laws and policies related to the oversight of health data and information
  • Confidentiality, privacy and security of health information

The application deadline for the autumn 2016 program is April 30, 2016. Applicants who submit a complete application by this date will be notified of a decision by May 13, 2016.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for the MHIHIM Advanced Standing Degree Option, you must have graduated from the MHA or Executive MHA programs at the University of Washington.

Applications to the Master of Health Informatics & Health Information Management Advanced Standing Degree are submitted online through the UW Graduate School. We recommend you start your application early because multiple steps are required.

Step One: Prepare to Apply

Get your MHA or Executive MHA transcripts from the University of Washington. Download unofficial transcripts or scan printed copies.

Update your resume or curriculum vitae. The resume or curriculum vitae should include a complete history of your academic and professional work experience as well as any licenses, honors (such as scholarships and awards), publications, membership in professional organizations and volunteer positions.

Complete the supplemental program application and written statement.

Step Two: Apply

Start your online application to the UW Graduate School. You can save your application and come back to it any time to continue working on it.

Select "MHIHIM Advanced Standing Prgm for UW E/MHA graduates" for the program name.

Upload all required documents.

Pay the nonrefundable application fee.
